Wandering Through Wonder: Our Day at the Botanic Garden, Shibpur by Nature Club, St. Francis Xavier School

August 14th, 2025

There’s something magical about stepping into a place where time seems to slow down, the air smells of fresh leaves, and every corner holds a surprise from nature. That’s exactly what we experienced during our Nature Club trip to the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Shibpur, Howrah — a green gem hiding just across the river from Kolkata.

This wasn’t just any field trip. With students from Classes IV to X joining in, it turned into a full-blown adventure through winding paths, towering trees, and a world of plants that felt like something out of a storybook.

First Stop: The Great Banyan Tree

Let’s talk about the showstopper first.

Imagine walking through a forest — only it’s not a forest. It’s one single tree. That’s the Great Banyan Tree. With over 3,600 aerial roots forming what looks like an entire woodland, this tree alone could be a reason to visit. We all stood in awe under its massive canopy, trying (and failing!) to capture it fully on our phones.

It’s not just a tree — it’s an experience.

Plants from Every Corner of the World.

From the tiniest orchids to the giant Amazon water lilies, we saw plants that most of us had only read about in textbooks. Bamboo groves swayed gently in the breeze, and every now and then, someone would spot a new species and call the rest of us over.

“Is this really from India?”

“Nope — South America!”

The garden is like a living encyclopedia, and every path leads to something unexpected.

Why We Fell in Love with the Place.

Sure, the plants were fascinating. But what really got to us was the calm. No honking cars, plastic free zone and no buzzing crowds. Just silence, interrupted by birdsong and the crunch of gravel under our shoes.

It felt like nature whispering, “Slow down. Look closer.”

Many of us just sat down on the grass, watching leaves sway, sketching trees, or quietly chatting with friends. It was peaceful in a way the city rarely allows.

Nature is the Best Classroom.

What made the trip even better was how much we learned — without it ever feeling like a lesson. Our teachers pointed out rare species, explained how plants adapt to different environments, and sparked so many “Oh wow, I didn’t know that!” moments.

Some of us started looking at trees differently. They weren’t just part of the background anymore — they had stories, too.

If You’re Planning a Visit…

Best time to go? October to March — it’s cooler, more comfortable, and perfect for long walks.

Monsoon lovers? The garden is stunning in the rain, but wear waterproof shoes — trust us.

Avoid summer unless you enjoy turning into a puddle.

Bring a camera! Or your phone — you’ll want to capture everything.

Ask for a guide if you’re curious about the science behind the beauty. It makes the trip even richer.

Final Thoughts.

We went to see plants. We came back with stories, questions, and a new kind of calm.

The Botanic Garden in Shibpur isn’t just about trees and flowers — it’s about reconnecting. With nature. With each other. And sometimes, with parts of ourselves we forget in the rush of daily life.

We’ll definitely be back.

Until then, let’s keep the green love growing.
