Standing Tall: Learning About Spine Health at St. Francis Xavier School

February 4th, 2026

Health awareness becomes truly meaningful when learning meets real-life relevance. Keeping this in mind, St. Francis Xavier School, in collaboration with the Spine Research Foundation, recently hosted an Awareness and Screening Programme for students of Classes IX to XII, focusing on the importance of spinal health during adolescence.

The session was led by Dr. Soumyajit Basu, a renowned Spine Surgeon, along with his team. Through an engaging and student-friendly interaction, the medical experts introduced students to Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)—a condition that often develops quietly during the teenage growth spurt and may go unnoticed without proper screening.

What made the session impactful was the way complex medical information was explained in simple terms. Students learned how small signs such as uneven shoulders, posture imbalance, or back asymmetry should not be ignored. The discussion highlighted a powerful message: early awareness leads to timely care, and timely care can make all the difference in long-term health.

The screening conducted during the programme offered valuable insights and reinforced the need for regular check-ups during adolescence. More importantly, it encouraged students to become more aware of their own bodies and take responsibility for their well-being.

Beyond medical facts, the session sparked conversations about posture, lifestyle habits, and self-care—topics often overlooked in everyday school life. Students participated with curiosity and enthusiasm, making the experience both informative and engaging.

This initiative stands as a reminder that schools play a vital role in shaping not only young minds but also healthy futures. St. Francis Xavier School is grateful to the Spine Research Foundation and Dr. Soumyajit Basu for guiding our students towards better awareness and healthier growth—one step at a time.
